Is there any difference between private placements and venture capital?

Is venture capital the same thing as a private placement? For example if several VC firms invested $20 million in a company would that be considered a private placement meaning is a private placement any investment in a private company, or are private placements something that is done with larger, more mature companies while VC is only in newer ones?
